Class 23 looks at King Jesus’ Kingdom, His “called out,” the church.
The Old Testament, this Portrait of God that we have been painting, has been leading up to two things.
1. The Christ, who is Jesus
2. The new Kingdom, which is the church
In this class, we look at that New Testament Kingdom.
The prophets spoke about it. The Jews longed for it. The disciples expected it. And when it finally came, it was nothing like most people imagined. The kingdom came exactly as God promised, but not in the way most people expected.
Jesus Corrected Their Misunderstanding
John 18:36 – “My kingdom is not of this world.”
The kingdom Jesus established is spiritual. It is entered through a new birth, not physical birth. Its citizens come from every tribe and nation.
Its King reigns from heaven. And its borders extend wherever people submit to Christ.
Jesus is the Head/Christ alone is King.
We enter by the King’s terms of citizenship
We wear the name of Jesus
We are organized the way Jesus commands
We worship in spirit and in truth
When Jeroboam became king, he changed worship
When Jesus became king, He changed worship too
In the new Kingdom:
We offer spiritual sacrifices
We are priests
Our sacrifices are spiritual
We sing
We pray directly to God
We take the Lord’s Supper each week
We worship together on a new day, the first day of the week
Early church writers and historians confirm these early Christian practices.
Are we in the Kingdom of the King’s making, or are we in a kingdom of men’s making? Just as God had one covenant people under the Old Testament, He has one church today.
