Coursework for Children

A parent’s instruction is important (Deuteronomy 6:6–7; Exodus 12:26–27). What is the curriculum? What did the wisest man teach his son? Follow “my son” through Proverbs:

Listen to and obey your parents (1:8; 4:20; 5:1; 6:20; 7:1).

Stay away from sinners (1:10), especially thieves (1:11–19), drinkers, and the party crowd (23:19–21; 28:7); do not walk with sinners (1:15).

Fear and find God (2:1–5).

Do not forget what I said (3:1; 4:10).

Do not despise God’s discipline (3:11).

Keep God before your eyes (3:21).

Do not commit adultery (5:20).

Do not mortgage property for another’s debt (6:1–5).

If you misspeak, correct it immediately— mend your fences and save your friendships (6:1–5).

Work hard while there is opportunity; do not be lazy (10:5).

Foolish sons lose their inheritances to wise servants (17:2).

Do not listen to bad advice (12:5).

You please me—your wise behavior gives me joy (23:15).

Follow my example (23:26).

Enjoy the good things in life (24:13).

Fear the Lord and the king; do not meddle with those given to change (24:21).

Others will judge me by your behavior (27:11), so remember my instructions.
