Warning Symbols

According to a January 6 AP story, the Michigan Lawsuit Abuse Watch held a Wacky Warning Label Contest, conducted as part of an effort to show the effects of lawsuits on warning labels.

• The label that took the $500 first prize was a note attached to a heat gun that produces temperatures of 1,000 degrees, alerting the consumer not to use the gun as a hairdryer.

• The $250 second prize award went to a label on a kitchen knife that warns: “Never try to catch a falling knife.”

• Third prize was the caution on a cocktail napkin with a map of the waterways around Hilton Head Island, S.C.: “Not to be used for navigation.”

• An honorable mention went to a warning on a bottle of dried bobcat urine used to keep pests away from garden plants: “Not for human consumption.”

God has placed serious warnings in His Word. We ignore them at our own peril.

• “And I say unto you, Whosoever shall put away his wife, except it be for fornication, and shall marry another, committeth adultery: and whoso marrieth her which is put away doth commit adultery” (Matthew 19:9).

• “Now the works of the flesh are manifest . . . Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God” (Galatians 5:19-21).

• “In flaming fire taking vengeance on them that know not God, and that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ: who shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord, and from the glory of his power” (2 Thessalonians 1:8-9).

• “If any man shall add unto these things, God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book: and if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book” (Revelation 22:18-19).
