Wouldn’t it be sad to have a god you have to keep picking up? The Philistines had this problem with their god, Dagon, when the ark of God was placed in the house with this idol. The next morning the priests of Dagon found it “fallen upon his face before the ark of the Lord” (1 Samuel 5:3). So they had to pick up their god to put him back in his place. Isn’t it ridiculous? Yet, people continue to do the same thing today.
The list could go on and on. These people believe their gods are picking them up when the gods are actually letting them down. Give thanks that you have a God who does not have to be picked up. Rather, David said, He picks us up. “He brought me up also out of an horrible pit, out of the miry clay, and set my feet upon a rock, and established my goings” (Psalm 40:2).
Incidentally, even though it is bad enough to have a god that falls down, can you imagine one that falls to pieces (1 Samuel 5:4)?
