Bible question

Why isn’t Cain listed as Adam’s descendant in the genealogies?

Cain was indeed a descendant of Adam (Genesis 4:1). However, when genealogies are listed, not all the children are listed. For example, if I were going to list some of my ancestors on my father's side, I would begin with my father, then proceed to his father (my grandfather), and so on. I would not list the fact that my dad had two brothers. Neither would I list any other male siblings as I progressed up the family tree.

The purpose of genealogies in the Bible is to give a perspective of time, and to show the line by which some important figure came into being. The genealogy of Jesus is a testimony to this fact. Note how the book of Matthew begins by showing how Jesus was a descendant of Abraham and David. Note also that the only son of Abraham listed is Isaac (though he had numerous other children) and the only son of David listed is Solomon (though he had many sons as well). This shows the fulfillment of prophecy as well as the fulfillment of God's promise to Abraham and David.
