Topic(s): Forgiveness, Sin
Todd Clippard
This is a question that has caused much controversy and fear
among religious folks. In truth, it should not be so.
The answer to the question, "What is the unforgivable sin?" can be
found in Mark 3:22-30. In this text, Jesus is casting out demons,
and His opposers accused Him of casting out demons through the power
of the Devil. Jesus refuted their ridiculous claim by noting a
kingdom that is divided against itself cannot stand.
At the conclusion of His rebuttal and defense, He said, "Assuredly,
I say to you, all sins will be forgiven the sons of men, and
whatever blasphemies they may utter; but he who blasphemes against
the Holy Spirit never has forgiveness, but is subject to eternal
condemnation" (vv 28-29).
In verse 30 is given the explanation of what He meant, "because they
said, 'He has an unclean spirit.'" The word "because" introduces
verse 30 as an explanation of the verses immediately preceding.
Therefore, to blaspheme the Holy Spirit was to be a witness of
Jesus' miracles, and attribute Jesus' power as being given to Him by
the Devil.
Since no one today can witness Jesus performing miracles, they
cannot attribute such power to the Devil. Therefore, by Divine
definition, it is not possible to blaspheme the Holy Spirit
today.
