Bible question

What does the Bible mean by “the heart?”

Todd Clippard

Topic(s): Bible Study

When the Bible speaks of the heart, it generally refers to the mind. "Heart" is translated from the Greek cardia. For this word, Thayer's Lexicon has as one of the primary definitions, "the center and seat of spiritual life, the soul or mind, as it is the fountain and seat of the thoughts, passions, desires, appetites, affections, purposes, endeavors (so in English heart, inner man, etc.).

This meaning would be consistent with such passages as Matthew 15:19 and Proverbs 23:7.
