Death, at Nine

Topic(s): Children, Humor

A group of nine-year-olds was asked their opinions on the subject of death.

  • Jim said, “When you die, they bury you in the ground and your soul goes to heaven; but your body can’t go to heaven because it’s too crowded up there already.”

  • Judy answered, “Only the good people go to heaven. The other people go where it’s hot all the time like in Florida.”

  • John replied, “Maybe I’ll die someday, but I hope I don’t die on my birthday because it’s no fun to celebrate your birthday if you’re dead.”

  • Marsha added, “When you die, you don’t have to do homework in heaven, unless your teacher is there too.”

“And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment” —Hebrews 9:27

It keeps going...and going...and going...

Topic(s): God's Sovereignty, Science

In 1977, the United States launched a rocket into space. On board was a small craft called Voyager I, a probe that was jettisoned into space to explore the planets. After Voyager finished sending back photos and data from the planet Jupiter and its neighbors, it didn’t stop working. It just kept going.

Today, 30 years later, that tiny vehicle is still going—traveling at a speed of over 38,000 miles per hour. And it is nearly 9 billion miles from the sun! Brilliant scientists sent a ship to the edge of our solar system. It’s astounding. It’s amazing. Mind-boggling!

But it’s absolutely puny when compared to what God has done. It would be like hearing someone brag to the architect of the Empire State Building that he had traveled to the second floor. We have barely begun to explore the vastness of God’s creation. Every small step by mankind should continue to put us in absolute awe of God’s power and creativity. While we have left the realm of one star with a spaceship, the Creator of the stars “calleth them all by name” (Isaiah 40:26). After all, He made them. Exploring the universe is amazing. But exploring the God who made it all—that’s beyond amazing. —Dave Branon

A New Attitude

Topic(s): Priorities, Wisdom

  1. Give people more than they expect—cheerfully (Philemon 1:21).

  2. Don’t believe all you hear, spend all you have, or sleep all you want.

  3. Smile when answering the phone. Callers can hear it in your voice.

  4. Remember that great love and great achievements involve great risk.

  5. When you say, “I’m sorry,” look the person in the eye.

  6. Be engaged at least six months before you get married.

  7. Believe in love at first sight.

  8. Spend some time alone (Matthew 14:23).

  9. When you say, “I love you,” mean it (1 Peter 1:22).

  10. Never laugh at a dream. People without dreams don’t have much.

  11. Don’t let a little dispute injure a great friendship (Proverbs 27:10).

  12. Talk slowly but think quickly (James 1:19).

  13. Don’t judge people by their relatives (Matthew 7:1).

  14. Marry a man/woman you love to talk to (1 Peter 3:7).

  15. Do an anonymous kindness each day (Ephesians 4:32).

  16. When you lose, don’t lose the lesson (James 1:1–3).

  17. When you make a mistake, take immediate steps to correct it.

  18. In disagreements, fight fairly. No name calling, threats, or bringing up ancient history.

  19. Remember the three Rs: Respect for self; Respect for others; and responsibility for all your actions.

  20. When someone asks you a question you don’t want to answer, smile and ask, “Why do you want to know?”

  21. Love deeply and passionately. You might get hurt but it’s the only way to live life completely.
